Hook-shaped peninsula in SE Massachusetts,
USA; 100 km/60 mi long and 1.6-32 km/1-20 mi
wide; population (1980) 150,000. Its beaches
and woods make it a popular tourist area. It
is separated from the rest of the state by
the Cape Cod Canal. The islands of Martha's
Vineyard and Nantucket are just south of the
cape. Basque and Norse fisherfolk are
believed to have visited Cape Cod many years
before the English Pilgrims landed at
Provincetown 1620. It was named after the cod
which were caught in the dangerous shoals of
the cape. The Kennedy family home is at the
resort of Hyannis Port.
